Never Give Up

Each challenge in our life is an opportunity to evolve and grow, should we understand the lesson and never give up. My daughter has gone through mental illness beginning at the age of 8 through the age of 14 with a variety of diagnosis. That time was very challenging, and I never gave up on my child. She spent time in a variety of treatment facilities, and I never gave up on her. I knew there had to be a better way life. If you stay strong in the face of challenges and be positive even when struggling against obstacles you will become empowered. Empowered to make a change!

Our change started when my daughter was 14, and she had recently returned from a 5-month stay at an inpatient residential treatment facility. She asked if she could go off all prescription medications. I don't recommend this without seeking medical help. We decided to listen to our daughter for one of the first times in her life, and with the advice of her doctor, she gradually went off her prescriptions. Going off her medicines as one direction we never thought of going with our child. We finally listened to our intuition as parents and the intuition of our child. Not outside influences.

At 18, she is now thriving while living a different lifestyle one of using holistic modalities; mind, body, and spirit. My family and I lived through this chaotic experience that was very challenging on every level. What I know to be true is that there was a reason for our journey and that was to share with other families so that they don't feel alone. For parents-struggling-like my family was-there is hope, there is a way forward. It might not be the same path taken but know that there is a way to support your child. Firstly, never, never give up.

3 Tips for Others: Finding Calm in Chaos

  • Find joy in the movement. When all else fails to look at the funny side of your situation. Humor is powerful, it allows us to detach from the chaos for a few moments. Laughter reminds us of the joy in life. There is joy in each moment, even the tough ones. Focus on that joy!

  • Surrender. Sometimes everything can seem unimaginably terrible that the only thing you can do is to give it up to a higher power. To surrender the moment and the outcome, knowing that everything will be okay. Have faith ultimately, even if you do not understand the why of it, there is a reason for everything.

  • Express Gratitude. When everything seems to be falling apart, it becomes easy to focus on the negative. Negative energy creeps up on you, often without you realizing it. Even in the darkest of times find something, if even small, to be grateful. Be grateful for your strengths, for being alive, for the ability to separate yourself from chaos and gain perspective.

I had an amazing support system of strong women, family, and friends while going through our challenging journey. I offer support to others as a space holder.
